Festival Retaining Advanced Winners 2017

Lee Hartley and Nathan Baker.

Liz writes: For the third year in a row! I watched the crucial last match between Fylde and Liverpool (the best team on paper!) After much hilarity and crazy smashing through hoops play from Paul Rigge the Fylde team got the innings and Nathan did a controlled break to 4 back. A real feat given the barracking that goes with the advanced play at the Festival. “Come on I’ve had two birthdays since you started this break” being the best from Mr Rigge. Liverpool missed the lift shot and Lee performed a text book triple on the poorer North Lawns to win the event. Well done team Fylde

Nathan writes: We set up a winner-takes-all final game against the vastly experienced Liverpool pairing of James Hawkins and Paul Rigge. The game started well for Liverpool and the players broke for lunch with James at 1-back to Nathan’s hoop 4 and Paul set up to start the second break with a sextuple peel still possible. Paul had just run 3-back when an uncharacteristic mistake saw him send a ball off the lawn, giving Nathan a chance to take his ball to 4-back. After James missed the lift shot, the stage was set for something special and Lee duly delivered with an excellent triple peel, made more incredible by the fact it was done on the inconsistent, undulating North lawns and under the pressure of a crucial final game. A couple of tricky moments were made to look easy and the trophy was brought home in assured fashion.

A fitting end to a good fun event , with some quality croquet, lots of laughs and the right result reached in the end.
