Fylde win the league after a hard fought win over Bury

Fylde: Alison Broughton (9.5), Andrew Webb (3), Ian THeakstone (5.5) Barry Broughton (7.5).
Bury: Roger Schofield (4.5), Phil Hunter (5), Margaret Eccles (6), Vi Richards (11).

Thanks to Roger and his team for a very friendly encounter and some truly great games of croquet.

Thanks to Roger (Bury’s Captain) for coming up with a solution to the late arrival of Andrew, he was still at home at 9:45, but rushed down, arriving at 10:15, to play his singles match against Roger. Round 3 was played first, with Fylde winning 3 of the four matches and Andrew losing 14-0 to Roger, a much needed coffee required.

Next came the doubles games Ian and Barry v Phil and Margaret was a close game, with Barry going to peg after using 2.5 bisques on his first visit. All that was left was for Ian to go round and finish off, after a few visits to the lawn he managed to peg out both balls securing victory. Andrew and Alison v Roger and Vi was a close affair, with Alison pegging off one of Burys balls (They were playing alternate stroke), which levelled the game @10 all, but Roger and Margaret managed to get round with the 3 balls and peg out their last ball winning 14 – 10. 

Round 2 was played next with Fylde winning 3 of the 4 encounters. Alison was in the groove beating Margaret 14 – 2. Barry also having a good game winning 14 – 8 against Vi. Andrew was also finding form beating Phil 14-8.

BOWDON EARLS 3 FYLDE 7

Fylde: Alison Broughton (9.5), Betty Bates (4.5) Benedict O’Connor (7.5) & Barry Broughton (7.5).
Bowdon: Charles Fraser (7.5), Andrew Jenkins (7.5), Phil Thompson (13), Alison Acton (13).

Fylde stay top of the pile after a hard-fought win in the heat at Bowdon.
The day started of well with Fylde chalking up wins in the opening doubles games. Benedict was in fine form using two and half bisques and running five hoops. It was decided not to run rover. Bowdon then broke down at hoop 4, allowing Barry on the lawn with 5 bisques to play with. All went well with Barry managing to peel Benedict's ball through rover and peg out.

The other doubles game was very close going to time with 9 hoops each scored. After Betty going to peg on her first visit to the lawn. It was all down to Alison B to secure the win, which she eventually did.

Lunch was taken.
The second round was honours even with Benedict and Alison B securing great wins against Charles and Phil respectively, winning 14-9 and 14-7. Both Betty and Barry lost by one point, in hard fought games against Andrew and Alison A respectively, losing 9-10 and 13-14.

Round 3 saw further wins for Benedict and Alison, although Bendict was in a close encounter against Andrew winning 14-13. Alison B beat Alison A 14-6. Barry won his game 14-7 against Phil and Betty narrowly lost against Charles 14-11, after a great fight back.

A great day was had by all, Bowdon as usual were fantastic hosts.

FYLDE 6 SOUTHPORT 4

Fylde – Alison Broughton (8.5), Derek Matthews (12) Robert Bentwood (11) & Barry Broughton (8.5).
Southport – Don Williamson (3), Tony Thomas (4), Eddie Green (4.5), Gail Moors (6)

Fylde chalked up a second win of the season in the 14 point on a warm but cloudy day on the Fylde coast.

It was honours even after the first round with Barry and Derek beating Don and Gail 12-9 and Alison and Robert losing to Tony and Eddie 7 - 14.

In round 2 Fylde won 3 out of the four encounters, Lunch was taken.

The afternoon started as per the morning with honours even Barry and Robert both winning their encounters with Alison losing and Derek narrowly losing his 13-14.

Southport were great opponents and an enjoyable day was had.
