Pendle 11 Fylde 5

Fylde; Peter Wilson 0, Liz Wilson 0.5, Alison Broughton 8 (c), Barry Broughton 9.
Pendle; Paul Dowdall 1, Catherine Parnell 2 (c), Garry Wilson 2, Libby Dixon 5.

Allison took the Captain's armband for the first time.

On the single banked lawns, we all managed one win, Allison two. There were some close games which all went against us. In their match Liz and Libby both pegged their ball out by accident. Garry V Peter was a carbon copy of Liz v Garry. Garry missing the peg in both games with the front ball leaving his strike ball at the peg, only for Fylde to hit it and prolong matters. But Garry hit the peg from distance in both games.

Barry and Allison both had comfortable wins v Paul, who got his revenges against the Wilsons. A special mention to Allison v Libby where nothing at all happened.

SOUTHPORT; Barbara Haslam(1P), Tony Thomas (2), Diana Williamson (4),Eileen Rossiter (7).
FYLDE: Alan Morton (3), Betty Bates (3), Philip Bass (5), Catherine Bass (8).

Round 1; Southport 4 Fylde 0.
Round 2; Southport 3 Fylde 1. Betty beat Diana 14-3.

At lunch the match score was Southport 7 Fylde 1. Fylde would need to win all the afternoon games to win the match which would be the biggest comeback since Lazarus. The temperature dropped and those who wore shorts in the morning were back in trousers and woolen hats.

Round 3; Southport 2 Fylde 2. Betty beat Barbara 14-6, Alan beat Tony 14-6
Round 4; Southport 3 Fylde 1. Betty beat Eileen 14-7.

SUMMARY; On paper two well matched teams but the experienced Southport team mastered the lawns and ran out easy winners. Betty played well and secured 3 wins. Philip's handicap changed to 6. Thank you to Southport for their hospitality.

Fylde 10 Bowdon 6

TRIGGER HAPPY

Fylde; Alan Morton 3, Betty Bates 3 1/2, Phil Snowden , 3 1/2, Alison Broughton 10.

Bowdon; Richard Saul 3, Fiona Whittaker 8, Nan Saul 8, Margaret Moss 10.

Phil Snowden was star of the match with four wins causing a handicap reduction due to his trigger to 3. Alison Broughton won three, almost winning the fourth with her tussle with Margaret and only lost by one point. Betty won two and Alan won one.

Worthy of note was the last match between Alan and Richard which was neck and neck for the last ten minutes. Richard sneaked in front and made an error which allowed Alan an easy in. Alan caught up, ran rover and went towards the peg but snookered himself so he could only peg out one. His opponent then finished leaving the game 14-13 to Bowdon. Fiona played an absolute blinder apologising for her good play, She commented on how nice our lawns were, which was praise indeed from a member of a prestigious club who have their own salaried groundsmen.

The promised rain held off thankfully.
