Fylde 4 Bury Peelers 3

Fylde: Peter H, Terry, Leonard & Ian.
Bury Peelers: Paul Kenworthy (4 1/2), Margaret Anderton (14), Geoff Young (14) & Jean Hargreaves (24).

The final match of the season was played under clear blue skies and glorious sunshine and Fylde revelled in the good weather before lunch. In the singles matches, Ian and Terry both found their best form from the start and finished their matches quickly. Ian won his game +25 against Geoff, and Terry finished five minutes later with a +26 win against Paul. The doubles match proved to be more of an even contest, going to time. Leonard and Peter established a comfortable lead midway through the game against Margaret and Jean, maintaining this to the end, eventually winning 22 - 12. Lunch and Fylde were 3 - 0 in the lead. After lunch, Terry quickly got going again and took his first ball to peg in one break. Margaret responded and, having run rover, went to peg Terry's ball out. However she inadvertently pegged her own ball out as well, leaving the match as a two-ball game with both balls still on hoop one. Terry managed to keep a 2 hoop lead through the rest of the game and won +5. In the three other games, Bury responded well and, although the games were close to the end, Paul beat Peter +6, Geoff beat Leonard +13 and Jean beat Ian + 7.

Fylde 4 Bowden Firs 3

Fylde: Lee, Peter H, Terry & Leonard.
Firs: Alan Mayne (1/2), David Cotton (4 1/2) Christine Irwin (8) & Steve Reynolds (11)

Despite all the rain this week, the lawns were in good condition, although they did become heavy during the morning's rain. Fylde got off to a good start, with Terry finding very good form against David. He pegged out without reply from his opponent in just over an hour. Christine also got off to a good start against Lee, but once her bisques ran out, Lee mounted a counter challenge and won the game +10 well within time. The doubles saw a good battle, Alan and Peter both taking their balls around fairly quickly. Leonard then scored hoops at a steady pace and gained Fylde a win just before time. Fylde were 3 - 0 up at lunch and the rain had also stopped!

Fortunes swung after lunch. Lee maintained his form and beat Alan +11 well within time. A change of lawn suited Christine in her match against Terry and she won comfortably +18. Peter battled gamely against David but eventually lost -8. Steve got off to a good start against Leonard and took both his balls to penult. Leonard recovered and fought back to level the scores with 10 minutes to go. Unfortunately, his second ball stuck at 4-back which allowed Steve to regain the innings and go on to win +6. A good day's play and even a glimpse of sunshine in the afternoon.

Crake 3 Fylde 4

As Peter Wilson, Lee and Liz were already committed to the advanced match at Crake on the same day and as Leonard and Betty were away at Hurlingham the handicap team comprised of the only 4 remaining association players – Peter Hallett, Ken, Alan and Ian.

The morning doubles was played between Peter and Ian vs Tony Saville and Linda Walker with the Fylde pair winning 21 -14. Ian came off smiling as under instruction from Peter he had completed his first peel. In the singles Alan beat Brian Walker 26 – 11 and Ken lost to Howard Bowron 8 -26. The score 2 -1 at lunch. The afternoon singles saw Howard beat Peter in quick time 26 – 0. Ian was the next to finish beating Brian 26 – 10 including peeling his partner ball through rover (the wrong way!!!) to win. Peter watched on but correctly kept his mouth shut and as no one spotted the error and the final score was agreed the error was condoned and the result stood. Alan was the next to finish beating Linda 26 – 3. An off form Ken fought bravely on but lost to Tony Saville 26 – 17.

Bowdon St Mary's 4 Fylde 3

Bowdon St Mary’s: Rupert Webb, Ros Pimlott, Margaret Russell & Chris Lewis
Fylde: Lee (c), Betty, Ken & Leonard

On a day of fairly steady light rain, interspersed with the occasional dry spell and heavy shower, Fylde travelled to Bowdon for the latest handicap match. The morning started badly as there were no biscuits on hand when we arrived. Instead there was a choice of crisps or nuts. Which is fine as a choice of nibbles at a party but after getting up early and travelling for an hour we wanted biscuits. Poor show. Lee and Leonard put this behind them and dominated the doubles against Ros and Chris, winning +11 just before time. However the lack of sugar clearly cost the rest of the team as Betty lost to Rupert -2 on time and Ken lost to Margaret -6. Fylde 1 Bowdon 2. A nice lunch revived the team and it wasn’t long before Lee was dispatching Rupert +7, including peels at the final 2 hoops. This was shortly followed by Betty pegging her second ball out from hoop 2 to beat Ros +8. This put Fylde 3-2 in front, with both of the other games close and destined to go to time. In a seesaw game Ken drew level with Chris with only a few minutes to go, only to miss a short roquet to lose -2. Leonard had saved a few bisques against Margaret and used these to draw level to send the game, and the match, into extra time. Margaret failed with her first attempt at the golden hoop, leaving Leonard a 10 yarder which would surely have won the game. However it sailed by and Margaret made no mistake the second time, giving Bowdon the match 4-3. Oh well.

Fylde 0 Pendle 7

Fylde: Terry Vernazza (12) Betty Bates (14) Leonard Ainsworth (18) Ken Harper (18)
Pendle: John Filsak (2) David Roe (3 1/2) Abdul Ahmad (8) Peter Dewhurst (18)

The weather was glorious, the food good, the croquet could have been better! Pendle fielded a very strong team and Fylde struggled to match them. In the morning doubles, Terry and Leonard got off to a reasonable start taking the first ball half way round. John Filsak then got the innings and immediatley took his ball to peg. The match was a more even tussle after that but John and Peter were comfortable winners. In the singles, a simiilar pattern emerged with Betty getting off to a good start with her bisques but, after a long battle, losing to Abdul. Ken had a good game and was in front for periods of time. However, once David Roe got in, he took his ball round and pegged out Ken's first ball. He then took his second ball round and pegged out to beat Ken +2. After lunch, John Filsak found a spell of excellent form, hitting in from all distances and comfortably beat Terry +15. A similar result saw Abdul beat Leonard. Betty put up a strong challenge against David but still lost -2, while Ken had a see-saw match with Peter but eventually lost -9. Not Fylde's best result!

Chester 5 Fylde 2

Chester: Mark Lloyd (2), David Guyton (10), Gareth Edwards (18), Helen Pickford (22)
Fylde: Martin Bradshaw (9), Betty Bates (16), Alan Morton (22), Ian Theakstone (24)
Unbeaten Fylde went looking for a third consecutive win at Westminster Park ,Chester . The conditions were overcast with a light breeze at the start of the match. In the morning singles Betty Bates accelerated away from Mark Lloyd and gave him little chance of recovery, winning comforably 26 - 9 within time. Alan Morton, having started well, could not get his second ball past hoop 3 and lost 19 - 13 to Gareth Edwards. In a low scoring doubles game, Bradshaw and Theakstone found the tactics of Guyton and Pickford difficult to cope with losing 14 - 11. 2 - 1 to Chester at lunch with the lawns speeding up. Combined with the infamous slope these factors proved difficult for Fylde in the afternoon singles. Alan Morton was the exception, doggedly grinding out a 16 - 8 win. over Helen Pickford. The other three Fylde players were not able to improve on the match score with Martin Bradshaw losing 26 - 12 to Mark Lloyd, Betty Bates lost 21 - 16 to David Guyton and Ian Theakstone losing 20 - 12 to Gareth Edwards.

Fylde 5 Bury Caesars 2

Fylde: Lee Hartely ( 0 ), Terry Vernazza (12), Betty Bates(16) Alan Morton ( 22)
Bury: Tony Phillips (6) Graham Saunders (12) Mac hardman (12) Len Forkin (16)
After the rains earlier in the week, the skies cleared to give a beautiful bright and warm day. The lawns were drying fast, and Betty soon found her touch and quickly started running hoops from all distances, chalking up a +21 victory well inside the time. Lee and Terry played the doubles match and watched while Len Forkin established an early lead after a good break. Terry and Lee fought back, and despite a comeback from the Bury players, went on to win the match +8 with time to spare. In the third match, Alan was getting to grips with matchplay after his return from Spain and after a close battle won his game +1 on time. An outdoor lunch followed in the spring sunshine.

In the afternoon, Terry shrugged off a shaky start and won his match +16 with time to spare. Bury rallied with both Tony Phillips and Mac Hardman winning their games, despite spirited resistance from both Lee and Betty. In the final match, Alan maintained his earlier form and won his game + 8 on time.

Southport 3 Fylde 4

Southport: Keith Roberts (5), Tony Thomas (7), Simon Wolf (8), Alan Farrell (10)
Fylde: Martin Bradshaw (9), Terry Vernazza (12), Leonard Ainsworth (18) Ken Harper ( 24)
Despite the poor forecast earlier in the week, the morning was cloudy but bright with a cool breeze. Play started promptly and the Fylde players were soon into their stride. Ken Harper was in particularly good form and used his bisques well. He raced into a substantial lead and finally won his game + 21, well within 2 hours. Terry and Leonard were playing the doubles match (only one this year) and again quickly got one ball to rover. Play was more even afterwards, with Keith Roberts running a number of hoops, but the match was eventually won by Fylde +6 on time. On the other lawn, Martin also established an early lead but Tony Thomas staged a strong comeback. Martin was the eventual winner +1 on time. The afternnon saw a reversal of fortunes. Martin was the only Fylde player to maintain his form and after a see-saw match ended up with a comfortable +17 win. Terry and Leonard struggled, and despite a fight back in the later stages, both lost their matches. Ken established an early lead but was eventually caught by Alan as time was called. The golden hoop finish was then won by Alan.
