FYLDE 7 CHESTER 9

Fylde: Ian Theakstone 5, Ken Harper 6, leonard Ainsworth 9, Catherine Bass 10
Chester: Janet Davies 5 Dennis Holman 7 Pat Clare 8 Mervyn Dexter 10

One of the hottest days we have played in with the wet lawns drying very fast. Janet was in good form winning all 4.Round 1 was even with 2 games apiece . Round 2 was better with Fylde winning a further 3.Lunchtime Score Fylde 5 Chester 3. An excellent lunch under the sun and a promise of a wartime air display which came to nothing. The lunch must have had something in it as it caused a collapse in the fylde team. Although Catherine had her first win for the side (Well done Catherine!) also one for Ken.

BIRKDALE 3 FYLDE 13

BIRKDALE: Brian Lewis 2.5, Ian Goulden 10, Jennifer Mauwdsley 10, Mary Warren 10
FYLDE: Peter Hallett 3.5, Ian Theakstone 5, Betty Bates 5, Geoffrey Lipshaw 10

Just at 10am the heavens opened so the wet weather gear was on for starters. Round 1 saw wins from Peter Ian and a good win against Brian from Betty. Round 2 produced wins from the same 3. So it was looking good for Fylde at lunch 6-2 up.The afternoon session started with a tough game for Ian against Brian, after a discussion on the rules for pegging out Brian pegged Ian out leaving Ians partner ball still on 2. So a 3 ball break was called for, this duly happened and at time it was all level. The game continued until a hoop was made,a long roquet by Ian enabled him to win 12-11. Another win from Betty and from Geoff. Round 4 saw a close game from Betty, who went on the lawn with clips on hoops 3 & 4 when time was called. Jennifer was on penult and rover. As Betty was playing the ball at hoop 3 she new she would have to peel one or two in order to win as it be just a draw if she got to peg. When approaching hoop 4, Betty used her other ball to roquet and peel. At then end of turn Betty had one ball on peg and the other on penult. She split up yellow and red so they were at the side of rover and penult and wired the black and blue using the safety of those hoops. Both Jennifer's balls were layed up at the side of the respective hoops they were for, which meant she had only one shot either way to hit. Jennifer missed narrowley and Betty won by 1. All the other players won so the match was won 13 - 3, well done TEAM FLYD (sic) !!!!! Birkdale were fielding a novice side but to their credit they played very well dispite their nerves against a side in top form.

FYLDE 8 Bowdon 8

Bowdon: Dave Holland (C), Alan Mayne, Carol Steinberg & Iman van den Bout
Fylde: Ken (C), Betty, Leo & Philip

Bowdon's view:
Iman van den Bout scored an excellent 3 out of 4 in his first ever team match. Alan Mayne showed that it is still possible to win despite giving away 4 extra bisques and needing to do 2 peels. He also won 3 out of 4. Carol Steinberg had one of those enjoyable but frustrating days!

2 - 6 down at lunch the secret weapon was unleashed to good effect. With Ian unavailable Ken took over as captain for the match. Fylde suffered the first half of the day with only a win from Betty and Ken. So Fylde found themselves 6-2 down at lunch. An excellent meal of salmon and prawns seemed to be the tonic required, as Fylde rallied round to gain 2 wins for Leo, 2 wins for Betty 1 for Ken and 1 for Phillip to gain an impressive draw.

llanfairfechan 11 FYLDE 5

An early start saw us in plenty of time for some refreshment. The 1st round saw only a win from Ian.Round 2 saw a good win from Phillip 10-1 and from a tight game with Ken finally winning 14-12. After lunch Llanfairfechan continued their assult on us to gain another 6 games. They were a very good side being League winners last year and leading the way this year, so we did well to get the 5 games.

FYLDE 11 BURY 5

Fylde: Ian Theakstone, Peter Hallett, Betty Bates & Leonard Ainsworth
Bury: Richard Harvey, Bob Whittle, Len & Colleen Forkin

The match was played on the hottest day this year (25deg). Peters Handicap was revised to 3.5 and Bury were given information on how to use a half bisques. The 1st games saw wins from leonard Peter and Ian, with only Ian pegging out. The 2nd set of games had wins from Betty Peter and Ian all pegging out this time. A break for lunch in brilliant sunshine with plenty of fluids. Round 3 saw Ian lose to Colleen but the rest all won. Last round was just 2 wins by Ian and Leonard. The last win by Ian triggered his handicap down to 6. So Fylde continue their unbeaten record in all disciplines. No pressure then on the next matches.

Southport 6 Fylde 10

FYLDE: Peter Wilson, Ian Theakstone (c), Ken Harper & Alan Morton
SOUTHPORT: Eileen Gallagher (c), Eileen Rossiter, Anne & Jean

A chilly start at the beautiful venue in Victoria Park using four lawns. The format moves each player to play one game on each lawn. This is quite a challenge for the away side as there were some features on each. Fylde secured a 3-1 lead which was retained at 5-3 over lunch. We were all glad of the hot meal by then topping it up with Tesco's Toffee Pavlova Yum. The third round was again tied so going into the last round Fylde needed just two more points for victory. The weather had turned considerably warmer by then and the lawns were playing quite fast especially around some hoops. An early finish by Ken put us on the hill and we passed the post with the captain pegging out soon afterwards. Alan added an extra point before the finish.

Pendle 6 Fylde 10

FYLDE: Peter Hallet, Ian Theakstone, Leonard Ainsworth & Geoffry Lipshaw
PENDLE: David Pollit, Catherine Parnell, Roy Berry, John Snowden, & Pam Pollit

Our 1st match of the 2010 season saw us at Pendle, who were fielding an unusual side with a team of 5 with 1 player playing 2 games in the morning and another player playing the afternoon games. After some discussion the 2 captains agreed. The Fylde were a player down but the Rev just made it for the 10am start. Although a sunny day there was a biting wind so it was wrap up time. This didn't deter Fylde as the 1st round saw wins from Ian. Leonard and Peter. Round 2 ended the same so at lunch Fylde were 6 - 2 ahead. The afternoon session saw wins from the same trio. Ian had a close game against Catherine being 10 all on time, however, Cath missed a hoop allowing Ian on to score a hoop to finish 11 - 10. Geoffry's final game was level on time so the game continued until a hoop was won, this unfortunately went Pendles way. Man of the match was Peter winning all 4 games to earn himself a Mars Bar.
