SUMMARY
A rainbow greeted us on our arrival but there was no pot of gold today. Fylde struggled to make any impact on the game and LLF made home advantage count. Thanks to Philip for driving on what is a long day‘s travel.

CAPTAINS NOTE
Fylde finished the season with 5 wins in 8 matches which is our best performance since joining the Golf League. Thanks to all the players who played this season and to Catherine for leading the team when I was unavailable.

CHESTER 8 FYLDE 10

Jayne Taylor (8)(c), Wyn Mealing (10), Roger Haigh (11), Janet Jackson (12)
Ian Theakstone (6), Betty Bates, (7), Catherine Bass (8)(c), Philip Bass (10)

Having triggered lower handicaps in the previous game against Pendle, Ian, Betty and Catherine gave plenty of bisques away through the day. The morning started well for Fylde with one doubles win out of two and six singles wins out of eight. The result in the lost doubles was a very low 3-2 in 45 minutes of play, demonstrating Chester’s defensive rather than attacking mode of play. In the singles Catherine and Philip beat Jayne and Wyn. Betty and Ian both beat Janet (4-7, 3-7) but lost to Roger, giving him 5 and 4 bisques respectively.
Three more wins were needed for match victory and potential to win the league this year, depending on the remaining fixture at Llanfairfechan. Culcheth’s performance and hoop difference. It was Janet’s match debut and before lunch Ian provided coaching on using her bisques more effectively. During the afternoon she changed her game and beat both Catherine and Philip (7-3, 7-4). Philip had a resounding win 2-7 against Roger although he had given away a bisque. Ian had a resounding 1-7 win against Jayne. Roger used his bisques effectively against Catherine to win 7-5. Betty just missed out at Golden Hoop against Jayne but wasn’t caught out a second time beating Wyn 6-7 and sealing victory for Fylde. Boosted by some coaching from Tony Thomas (Southport) earlier in the week, star of the match was Philip with three singles wins. Useful learning point – wait until the end of the match before giving tips to the opposing team!

Fylde 13 Pendle 5

Ian Theakstone (7), Betty Bates (8), Catherine Bass (c) (9) and Philip Bass (10)
Geoff Whitaker (c) (7), Jonty Parkinson (8), Paul Dowdall (10) and Jan McLardy (11)

Although rain threatened, it just stayed dull and cloudy all day.
Fylde took an early lead by winning both morning doubles games. Catherine was not performing well but partner Betty romped away when given hoop running chances. The first of these came when she scored Hoop 2 with her black ball from a position alongside Hoop 1. Ian and Philip also played well winning 7-4. In the morning singles, Betty won both her games, scoring with three superb jump shots in her last game against Paul. Catherine continued to be dogged by inaccuracy, losing 5-7 to Geoff (who ran Hoop 12 with a fantastic jump shot from about seven feet away) but she picked up in the second game beating Jonty 7-4. Philip and Ian had one win each. By lunchtime the score was 7-3.

After lunch, Betty beat Geoff by a convincing 7-1 and nearly had a clean sheet but just slipped at Golden Hoop to give Jonty a 6-7 win in her last game. In his first afternoon game, Ian put his red ball into the jaws of Hoop 8 from the far corner behind Hoop 7 on Lawn 3. Jonty promoted his blue ball behind Hoop 8, preparing to knock the red out on his next turn but in magnificent style Ian hit yellow from the far boundary and pushed red through. He took the game easily 7-3 and won his final game at Golden Hoop. Philip slogged it out with Jan in the final game, piping her at the post to win 6-5. Catherine's form continued to improve and she won both remaining games. Three wins each for Ian, Betty and Catherine have triggered lower handicaps. Most of the games were close scoring with four going to Golden Hoop and the visitors said they had enjoyed the day. My thanks to our team who were all stars on the day, setting out lawns and assisting with catering arrangements, but Betty shone just that bit brighter!

Fylde 3 Bowdon 1
The match was level at 7-7 at the start of this round. Alan got off to a good start by Beating Alan M 7-5. He ran hoop 2 from 20 yards to score the longest hoop point of the match .Ian followed up by beating David 7-4 however Betty had to play a Golden Hoop decider with Margaret who got the edge on Betty to win 7-6. Steve was not aware that he needed to win to clinch the points. In a level play game with Brian he won 7-4 and so Fylde had won the match 10-8. Well done Steve!

CULCHETH 10 FYLDE 6

FYLDE: Alan Morton, Peter Hallett, Betty Bates, Philip Bass.
CULCHETH: Bob Connop, Anne Connop, Alan Wright, Brian Poynton.

A very wet day with numerous heavy showers. At the start of the match there were puddles forming towards the south boundary but these gradually disappeared .
ROUND 1
Bury 4 Fylde 0
Culcheth were well in control in the early stages. Betty was first on court playing in heavy rain and on a sodden lawn she found Bob in good form. Philip couldn’t overcome Anne despite his extra turns. Alan M started well leading 3-0 against Alan W including a 13 yard hoop run at 2 but Alan W came back and secured a Golden Hoop win. Brian used his extra turns well to beat Peter. Bob7- Betty 2,Anne 7- Philip 4, Alan W 7 -Alan M 6, Brian 7 -Peter 3
ROUND 2
Culcheth 3 Fylde 1
Betty was the only success in this round winning a tie break at Hoop13 (GH). Philip had a close game with Bob but Bob’s experience secured the win. Peter lost at the Hoop 13 (GH) against Alan W who now had two tie break wins. Alan M played accurately but every time he threatened to score, Brian used his extra turns to his advantage and won comfortably Bob7-Philip 5, Betty 7-Anne 6, Alan W 7-Peter6, Brian 7-Alan M 2 A very nice lunch was provided with the assistance of four lady members. Fylde had an uphill task needing 7 wins out of 8 games to make a draw. Mission Impossible? Maybe but you never write off a Fylde team.
ROUND 3
Fylde 3 Culcheth 1
A good round for Fylde. Peter7-Bob 5, Anne 7-Alan M 6, Philip 7-Alan W 3, Betty 7-Brian 5
ROUND 4
Fylde 2 Culcheth 2
Fylde were determined to try and win the last round. Alan M beat Bob and then Betty outplayed Alan W to take Fylde to within 2 games of the draw. Peter looked to have secured the third win when he had his ball in the jaws of Hoop 12 and leading 6-5. Anne only had a jump shot chance to tie the game and she did it. On to Hoop 13 where Peter was beaten in the tie break. Alan M 7-Bob 4, Anne 7-Peter 6, Betty 7-AlanW 1, Brian 7 -Philip 4. SUMMARY
A good match played with all games completed within the time limits. There were 5 tie break games of which Fylde won 1. Thanks to all the players for their efforts and in particular to Philip who stepped in to play at very short notice.

FYLDE 11 BURY NORTH 7

Fylde: Ian Theakstone (7), Catherine Bass (9) (c), Geoffrey Lipshaw (10), Philip Bass (11)
Bury Norths: Maureen Whittle (8), Mick Sandiford (8), Susan Hardman (9) (c), Vi Richards (11)

It was a beautiful sunny day - so sunny that Bury Norths decided to take the leisurely tourist route and arrived a little bit late after getting lost, Webmeister adds: Disgracefull have they not availed the website directions page? but it was no problem since the new format Golf match takes some of the time pressure off teams. Instead of playing seven games each, only five are played. Catherine and Geoffrey just failed to win their doubles at the Golden Hoop and both just failed at Golden Hoop again in two of the singles matches. Only one match went to time when Geoffrey and Vi were level at 5-5, Vi going on to pip Geoffrey to the deciding hoop. After the first three singles rounds, Fylde were leading 8-6 needing two more wins to take the match. On her final game, Catherine found herself once again at the Golden Hoop and, determined to succeed in case it should tip the balance, played a number of defensive shots against Mick (which she had failed to do in earlier games) until her own unthreatened ball was in front of the hoop and a smooth run resulted. She needn't have worried - winning their doubles match had got Ian and Philip off to a flying start and they didn't touch the ground all day - winning all four of their singles matches in close games. An incredible performance. Many thanks to Alan and Cath who prepared a wonderful lunch and did all the washing up which was a great help to the team. The win takes Fylde up the table to joint first place with Culcheth and Bury Souths but joint second on hoop difference. A win against leaders Culcheth on 16 July would be nice to promote us again!!

BURY SOUTH 11 FYLDE 7

FYLDE: Alan Morton (5), Ian Theakstone (7), Philip Bass (11), Cath Morton (12).
BURY: Sheila Bruckshaw (4), Judith Gaskell (6), Ken Eccles (10), Margaret Eccles (12).

A cool, showery day for the players. A rock band was performing in Coronation Park.

DOUBLES
Alan and Cath lost 4-6 to Sheila and Margaret. An unusual ending to this game. Margaret had placed her red ball in the jaws of Hoop 11. Sheila shook hands with her opponent. Alan said ‘you haven’t run the hoop yet’. Sheila hit the red ball to run the hoop. Sheila had played the wrong ball so the hoop point did not score. Alan /Cath recommenced the game with the ball of their choice leaving the red ball on the non-playing side of the hoop. However, time was completed to give Bury the win. Ian and Philip beat Judith and Ken 5-4.

SINGLES
ROUND 1
Bury 3 Fylde 1 Cath had the only win beating Judith 7-6. Philip lost 4-7 to Sheila, Alan lost 4-7 to Ken but did score a 21 yard hoop and Ian lost 6-7 to Margaret.
ROUND 2
Bury 3 Fylde 1 Again Cath was the only success by beating Sheila 7-5. Philip lost 6-7 to Judith, Ian lost 5-7 to Ken and Alan lost 3-7 to Margaret. Alan and Ian were finding it hard going against the higher handicap players.
ROUND 3
Fylde 3 Bury 1 A good round for Fylde which took the match score to Fylde 6 Bury 8 and gave Fylde a chance in the final round. Ian beat Sheila 7-3, Alan beat Judith 7-6 which saw 3 balls in an offside position as a result of Alan scoring Hoop 12 whist shooting from Hoop 11, Philip beat Margaret 6-5 and Cath lost to Ken 4-6.
ROUND 4
Fylde 1 Bury 3 Bury clinched the win with Sheila beating Alan 6-5, Ian beat Judith 7-3, Ken beat Philip 7-6 and Cath lost 5-7 to Margaret.

FYLDE 13 SOUTHPORT 5

FYLDE: Alan Morton (6), Betty Bates (9), Geoffrey Lipshaw (11),Steve Elsmore (12).
SOUTHPORT: Mary Warren(7), Eileen Rossiter (10), Pauline Rooney(10), Judith Farrell (12).

A sunny day but very blustery conditions. Steve and Judith were playing their first NW Federation matches DOUBLES Southport won both matches 7-6. Alan and Betty fought back from 2-5 to tie the game but failed to get the winning point. SINGLES ROUND 1 Fylde 3 Southport 1 Alan beat Pauline 7-1, Betty beat Judith 7-0. Mary was to rue that she did not forestall Geoffrey when he ran a hoop with his partner ball that was not in sequence and Geoffrey went on to beat Mary 7-6. ROUND 2 Fylde 2 Southport 2 Alan beat Judith 7-4 but the newcomer started incredibly well by running hoop 1 from corner 1 boundary line at a very acute angle with Alan in position to run the hoop. Geoffrey involved in another ‘Golden Hoop’ decider beat Eileen 7-6 after an excellent first shot which came through the back of the hoop to take a hoop running position and so win the game. ROUND 3 Fylde 4 Southport 0 This round of games saw Fylde take a commanding lead. Steve had his first win by beating Pauline 6-4. Geoffrey followed on with a 7-3 win over Judith, Betty beat Mary 5-2 and Alan beat Eileen 7-4. ROUND 4 Fylde 4 Southport 0 Fylde won the final 4 games to secure a 13-5 win. As a result ,Alan, Betty and Geoffrey triggered to lower handicaps. Alan encountered an unusual outside agent in his game with Mary. He played a shot which rolled over an object. He picked up the object and exclaimed he had been ’wired’ as he held up a wire from a ladies undergarment.

SUMMARY A good match played in difficult windy conditions. Congratulations to all the players for their contributions and a special mention for Steve who did really well in his first game for the Club. Thanks to Cath for assisting at lunchtime and Sue, Maureen and Chris who came to support the team .
