PUBLICITY OFFICER GOES SOUTH
During our recent holiday to visit family in Australia we took the opportunity to find croquet clubs in New South Wales. We found several clubs in the area and decided to visit Bundanoon C.C. The club is based at the sports complex in Bundanoon adjacent to the bowling club. Club day is Wednesday mornings and so we contacted Ian McClelland ,club secretary to arrange a visit and to play at the club. On arrival we found the members all attired in their club colours which are royal blue shirts and white trousers. The club has two full sized lawns adjacent to their pavilion. On club days the players meet at 10 a.m. and draw lots to see who plays whom. The players have handicaps but in New South Wales the highest handicap that can be used is 20. There is no league but clubs arrange matches against other clubs in the Southern Highlands. Country Croquet - NSW, Australia Clubs also have Croquet Carnivals which is the equivalent of our Tournaments. Golf Croquet is not normally played at Bundanoon so Cath played a short lawn game with Jackie Crossley against me. Cath enjoyed the game and is encouraged to play more Association croquet .We picked a very good day to visit as it was the 103rd birthday of John Hope who had played croquet until he was 99 years young. We were introduced to John and then his birthday was toasted with champagne and we all had birthday cake. On our second visit Cath and I were drawn against Keith and Jackie and played our matches. The games were scheduled for 2 hours and at the end of the matches we all sat down and had a ‘sausage sizzle’. The club captain Dick Topham presented us with club badges and Alan got his Association Handicap card for his first win in Australia. The web sites for the Croquet New South Wales and Country Croquet New South Wales is managed by David Archer.Croquet NSW, Australia I gave him our club website details and when we visited him at his home he took great pleasure in logging on. We also had the opportunity to Play Golf Croquet at the Southern Highlands club based in the village of Exeter. The had two good lawns next the cricket ground and were fenced off as we were at Hope Street. We were made very welcome at both clubs and as we have e mail links with the Bundanoon club we shall keep them informed of our activities at Fylde and look forward to playing at Bundanoon in the future.

Lawn Update
A great turn out from the membership for scarifying day.
Although the conditions were wet, we achieved everything we set out to do. The machine was well behaved except for a strange period of about ninty minutes where it kept stopping and throwing the chain off.
Terry and Peter eventually prevailed.
An added bonus was the water supply to the leaking tap next to lawn one was cut off.

TREES FOR THE CHOP
The Leylandii trees by short lawn 4 are to be felled to remove the danger of any falling [again] on the lawns. It is expected that this will improve the drainage and condition of short lawn 4.
The smaller trees behind the Leylandii [hardly visible in the photograph] do not belong to SSLTC and will remain.

LEE WINS SOUTHPORT
The Southport and Birkdale Croquet Club Jubilee Handicap tankard was played for over the bank holiday weekend. A Herculean effort from the ground staff on Friday night and Saturday morning to remove the surface water meant that the 20 competitors began more or less on time. After two days Lee was leading with 6/6 but halfway through the morning the lawns flooded and the overnight positions became the final result.

TEST YOURSELF
The CA has produced a series of questions on the laws of the game.
The questions are asked in a random order and remembered until you log out.In the world of Croquet Law questions the players (or sides) are often referred to as Ray (Red & Yellow) and Bab (Black & Blue). Doing this quiz will strengthen your knowledge of the Laws. There are no trick questions but to get the most out of the challenge please read the questions carefully!
