What is croquet all about?

Why should you give it a try?

Croquet: six hoops, four balls, two mallets and a patch of grass.

Sounds easy enough.

Croquet is a game of skill and strategy, angles, tactics, guile.

A bit like snooker on grass.

Association Croquet

Croquet is a race to put your two balls through the hoops then hit the centre peg before your opponent does so with their two balls.

It has been referred to as snooker on grass because it shares the ideas of;

  • striking a ball so that it hits another ball.
  • gaining extra shots and making a break.
  • playing safety shots.

The players take it in turns, one is in play the other sitting on the sidelines waiting for the opponent to finish, either by making a mistake or by playing a safety shot.

Golf Croquet

Golf Croquet may be played with two players taking two balls each, or two parnerships where the players have one ball each.

You start in a corner and take turns, of one shot each, to play towards Hoop One. The first person to run the hoop scores the point. Players then contest Hoop Two playing their balls from where they lie. You play until one side has scored seven points.

Players remain on the lawn as each take their single shot turns.

The benefits of croquet

  • Having fun with friends.
  • A mild mental challenge.
  • Fresh air.
  • Exercise.
  • Competition, if you wish.
